The Authentic Voices: Medical Setting focuses on communication between healthcare providers and patients who do not speak English fluently. Healthcare organizations throughout the nation are serving more English language learners than ever before. Hospitals, clinics and health departments in cities, small towns and rural communities are serving new immigrants every day. The Authentic Voices DVD features unscripted doctor-patient and nurse-patient communication in two rural health clinics.
The training video has a segment in English for providers and a segment in Spanish for patients. Both segments present information and strategies for communicating effectively while using an interpreter. The Spanish segment also models the direct communication with medical providers that is expected in the U.S. but unfamiliar to many new immigrants.
Even for immigrants who do not speak Spanish, the vignettes from the videos are a useful illustration of key techniques for communicating through an interpreter, such as where to sit during a meeting, how long to speak, and who to look at.
A Resource Guide accompanies the video. It contains a summary of the content to be used as a reference and additional information to support systemic implementation.
